Because of their microscopic size and water-dependent swimming movement, Steinernema feltiae nematodes can only reach a host through a film of soil moisture — in dry or cracked soil they dehydrate and die before infecting anything. The 15–25°C soil temperature window matters too: below it the nematode’s metabolism slows drastically, and above it the effectiveness of its symbiotic bacterium (Xenorhabdus) drops, so either extreme sharply reduces treatment success.
- Why should a potato trap be checked and replaced every 2–3 days instead of left in the ground longer?
A freshly cut, buried potato half is highly attractive to wireworms at first thanks to its scent and moisture, but after 2–3 days the bait starts to decompose, its scent profile changes, and larvae that have already settled in may begin to leave if the trap is left unchecked too long. Frequent, regular replacement ensures the bait stays maximally attractive and that captured larvae are reliably removed before they can return to the soil.
