- Why do 3rd-4th instar larvae cause the most damage, rather than the adult beetle?
Larvae reach their peak body mass in the final stage of development before pupating in the soil, which is why their energy demand is highest at this point — this is why they eat 10-15 times more per day than an adult beetle. Since larvae can’t fly and stay on one plant throughout, a single batch hatched from one egg cluster can completely defoliate a potato plant within days, while the flying adults tend to spread out across multiple plants instead.
- Why does Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis only affect the larvae and not the adult beetles?
The crystal proteins produced by the Bt bacterium only activate in an alkaline gut environment, which is characteristic of the larval digestive system — the adult beetle’s gut pH and digestive processes are different, so the protein can’t bind there and exert its toxic effect. That’s why Bt-based spraying is best timed specifically for the younger larval stages (1st-3rd instar), when they’re actively feeding on the sprayed leaves.
- Why should both neem oil and Bt be sprayed in the evening rather than during the day?
Both active ingredients (azadirachtin and Bt’s crystal proteins) are UV-sensitive, meaning direct sunlight breaks them down and deactivates them within a few hours, before they can act on the pest. Evening spraying gives the active ingredient the whole night to penetrate leaf tissue or be ingested by feeding larvae, before sunlight would break it down again the next day.
- Why isn’t crop rotation alone enough against Colorado potato beetle, if the beetle can’t fly during its larval stage?
While the larvae are indeed stationary, the adult beetles can fly, covering even several hundred metres to find the nearest potato bed after overwintering individuals wake up in the soil. Crop rotation alone therefore doesn’t eliminate the risk of infestation, but it significantly reduces the chance that overwintering beetles in the soil will immediately find the new planting without searching — which is why it’s worth combining with hand-picking and biological treatments.
