Why exactly 4 years for the rotation cycle? Soil-borne pathogens and pests typically remain viable for 2-3 years without food in the soil – a 4-year cycle ensures the specialized pathogen population has significantly declined by the time a plant family returns to a bed.

Why exactly this order (legumes \u2192 leafy \u2192 fruiting \u2192 root vegetables)? Legumes fix nitrogen in the soil, which nitrogen-hungry leafy/brassica crops use the following year; fruiting crops need moderate nitrogen but lots of potassium-phosphorus for fruit set; root vegetables need the least nutrients, and their deep roots loosen the soil before the next legume cycle.
